How to use a vape device

A vape device is one you fill with the e-liquid you choose and control the power on. It's bigger than a pod system with denser vapour, and it needs a little tuning to get the best flavour out of it.

• Priming the coil and tank

Once you have fitted the coil inside the tank, fill it with e-liquid and close it properly. Wait 10 minutes before the first puff so the cotton soaks through — this is the step that keeps the coil from burning.

• Setting the power (wattage)

Start at a low wattage and raise it gradually until you reach the range printed on the coil itself. Open the airflow enough to cool the coil. Too much power burns the cotton and ruins the flavour.

• When should you change the coil?

As soon as the taste changes or turns burnt. A mesh coil gives a clearer taste and lasts longer with lighter e-liquids. Never let the tank run dry.

How to use a pod system

A pod system is a small device that runs on apod you can swap — giving you a draw close to a cigarette, with a flavour you pick. Smaller than a vape device, with easier handling.

• First run with a new pod

Fit the pod and leave it for 10 minutes before the first puff so the cotton soaks up the e-liquid. Puff straight away and you get a burnt taste and lose the pod on day one.

• When should you change the pod?

Change the pod as soon as you notice the flavour dropping off or a burnt taste — usually every one to two weeks depending on how much you use it. Sweet and dark flavours wear a pod out faster.

• Mouth-to-lung or direct-to-lung?

Mouth-to-lung (MTL) draws into the mouth first then the chest — closer to a cigarette and suited to higher nicotine. Direct-to-lung (DTL) goes straight to the chest and needs a stronger device and lighter nicotine.

Vape device problems and fixes

Vape devices have more parts, so problems usually come from the coil, the battery or the settings. Here are the most common ones.

• Burnt taste

The wattage is above the range printed on the coil, or the tank is nearly empty, or you did not wait after fitting a new coil. Lower the wattage, fill the tank and wait 10 minutes.

• The tank leaks

Check the coil is fitted correctly and the O-rings are intact. Don't overfill, and avoid leaving the device somewhere hot like a car.

• The battery gets hot or drains fast

Inspect the battery wrap and make sure there are no tears. Excess heat or fast draining is a sign it needs replacing. Clean the contact points, and keep batteries away from keys and metal objects.

• Weak vapour

A worn coil, low wattage, or closed airflow. Change the coil first, then raise the power gradually.

Pod system problems and fixes

Most pod-system problems come back to the pod itself or the contact points. Try these before assuming the device is broken.

• Burnt taste

Either you did not wait 10 minutes after fitting the pod, or the pod is finished, or the e-liquid is nearly out. A burnt pod does not recover — replace it.

• The device won't draw

Clean the contact points between the pod and the device with a dry cloth, and make sure the pod is pushed all the way in. If it has a button, check the device isn't locked (usually 5 clicks).

• The pod leaks

Overfilling, heat or pressure. Fill only to the marked line, keep the device upright, and avoid very hard draws.

• The battery drains fast

Normal with heavy use, but if it suddenly drains the battery has started to weaken. Use a suitable charger and don't leave it charging all night.
